Course Description: The Beat of Chris Vannoy and Other Beat Poets-Poem-Making with Jim Moreno

Poetry Composition Through Instruction

Sunday, January 19, 2020, 1:00 P.M. To 4:00 P.M.

Journalist Jeff Weiss wrote an article, Driving the Beat Road, about our poetry theme of this month, the first poetry workshop of 2020 by San Diego Writers, Ink poet Jim Moreno. In the article Weiss wrote:More than a half-century after their emergence, the Beats still offer up wild style, a sense of freedom and wonder for the natural world almost unrivaled in postwar literature. After more than 2 decades of writing and performing original verse on San Diego open mic stages, touring in the United States & Europe, being voted the California State Beat Poet, the San Diego Beat Poet, and the United States Beat Poet, Chris Vannoy’s spoken word journey holds major attention in this writing workshop.

Vannoy’s poem, What is “Beat”? Has lines that wake up some sort of literary libido in the reader or the listener: It’s beat children struggling to save a beat planet from plastic bags roiling in a radiated sea…Beat is the long slow cry of distant train whistles in the middle of a long dark dream…It’s jazz blues crying out on the night of moody stars over a city that never sleeps…Poems from Chris’ 2014 offering, A Strange Summer, and 2018’s All There Is, will be the focal point for this writing workshop’s first 90 minutes.

The second 90 minutes will include other Beat Poets, some of which appear in a 1956 photo outside the City Lights Bookstore in San Francisco: Bob Donlon (Rob Donnelly), Neal Cassady, Allen Ginsberg, Robert LaVigne, and Lawrence Ferlinghetti. Not to be outdone by the men , women Beats such as Diane Di Prima, Hettie Jones, Ann Waldman, & Joyce Johnson were widely read and held their own with the men.Complete the PayPal payment for the desired class to enroll.
